Torchlight II makes me feel as creative in building an RPG hero as I ever have, and unleashing my creativity on the huge variety of enemies remains a pure joy after dozens of hours. The skill design is likewise excellent, with multiple point investments in an ability unlocking powerful bonuses like doubled range or additional projectiles on top of the expected boosts to its primary effect. Equipment comes with tons of interesting modifiers on it, from every passive stat boost you could imagine to fun triggered effects like raising steaming geysers from the earth occasionally when you hit something. Through all that painful death and eventual triumph, the freedom Torchlight II allows in character builds kept my interest locked. If it weren’t for my discovery of the spellcasting build I beat the game with, the finale would have been rough going indeed. Even with all that, I could not hang in melee with most foes on Veteran difficulty. I switched from dual wielding to a shield, dumped 15 consecutive levels into the health/armor/block-boosting vitality stat, and emphasized armor and health to the exclusion of all other attributes on my gear. The end of the game is the worst offender the last three hours are an unbelievable deathtrap for any melee hero. On several occasions, my experience toggled between an effortless waltz through wave after wave of enemies to a potion-chugging slog through foes that halved my health bar with a single swing. The oddly inconsistent balancing is Torchlight II’s biggest rough spot. Not allowing players to rebuild their character at all would have been a significant downside, particularly when faced with one of the many ludicrous difficulty spikes. Runic included the ability to re-do your last three skill points in the game, but I feel strongly that playing around with different builds is a huge net positive in games like this, especially with the impressive diversity within each of Torchlight II’s four classes. In fairness, I used a developer-sanctioned cheat in that metamorphosis (see sidebar). I flipped my approach to combat on its head more than once in my berserker playthrough, morphing wholesale from a dual-wielding melee machine to a sword-and-board battlemage midway through the third act. A steady drip of new skill unlocks continually puts new tools in your belt, often enabling entirely new tactics. The boss fights are similarly creative, many of which smartly push players out of their comfort zone by punishing or demanding certain strategies or engagement distances. Monsters constantly throw new challenges at you: beasts generate clones by eating corpses, steam-powered automatons spawn lightning-spewing gyrocopters, and mushroom mages create mana-draining void zones. No matter where you are or what skill and equipment loadout you build, Torchlight II is never boring. Fifteen or so hours later, with the final boss dead at your feet, about 50 levels under your belt, and an inventory full of powerful magical gear, you’re ready to enter the Mapworks with its unique and randomly generated challenges or start over in new game plus. Monsters explode in showers of loot and experience points, but not until they’ve demonstrated their own pyrotechnic tricks. The camera remains centered on your hero as you click around the field to move, attack, and fire off explosive powers that range from launching galleon-sized cannonballs to summoning packs of spectral wolves. Torchlight II’s isometric fantasy/steampunk combat is exactly as expected. Torchlight II forgoes robust an online infrastructure, instead focusing on delivering amazing action in its loot-rich dungeon crawls and more freedom to build your character than anything in recent memory. Beating Blizzard is an awfully high bar to be set before a game is even out, but the team at Runic Games can hang with the big boys. The question was whether it was going to compete with or even beat Diablo III at its own game. Nobody paying attention to PC gaming over the last year was concerned about whether Torchlight II was going to be good (it is). ![]() Wasted on you by morgan wallen12/24/2023 ![]() And then the mechanized, skittering drums kick in, and it feels like seeing a tiny, weird robot make its way across a bar near closing time: a strange and jolting novelty, which after a few minutes starts to looks really cool and like it was always meant to be there. Wallen’s voice has just the right amount of beauty and grit, wrapping itself around the guitars and tumbling through the chorus. I’m humming and strumming this one constantly already. And damn it, it’s really good as it is, pulling off the trick that Kane Brown inexplicably hasn’t yet. You could absolutely give it to any replacement-value R&B singer instead of Morgan Wallen, and it’d also be fine. It would really work as just a country song without the trap beat, and it would totally work without the country elements too. I get why this was the song from the album to break out, but I am also a little bummed that it’s probably going to overshadow some of the others that are more deserving of being Top 10 hits.Įdward Okulicz: This is one of the most effective hook delivery devices of 2021 so far, and it’s got something for everyone, both what they want, and what they don’t realise they want yet. That may be the point, but it’s a lot less memorable in comparison to the other sad drinking songs on the album like “865” and “Only Thing That’s Gone”. The hook is fine, but the trap-like skitter of the drums and the sour chords make a song that never builds to any real emotional climax. Problem is, the song is pretty sluggish and not even all that cathartic. A dark, dour song that wallows in its misery and recounts the regret and heartbreak that he feels over the one who got away. I totally get its appeal, and in a way, it represents Wallen’s appeal pretty concretely. Unfortunately, “Wasted on You” is not one of the reasons why. That’s bound to hamper the album’s quality as a whole, but it has so many excellent songs that show genuine growth in Wallen’s music that I think the future looks bright for him. And as for the click-track beat, the less said the better.Īl Varela: The double-edged sword of Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous is that there is enough quality stuff on it for you to pick and choose your favorite songs while ignoring the ones you dislike. Thomas Inskeep: Wallen’s voice on “Wasted on You” is just as whiny as his lyrics. The way the rap-influenced drums hit in the chorus are another thing that I came to like, and overall the music sounds good here. ![]() He maybe could’ve injected more emotion, especially in the chorus, but it’s possible that might have just come off as overwrought. His singing is good too, with enough gruffness to get to the emotions he’s trying to convey. ![]() The lyrics are one - at first I just heard the generic country tropes (“bourbon” “boots” “Chevy” etc), but I think when listened to properly the song tells a story with enough detail that it feels like something that really happened to Wallen. First listen I wasn’t very impressed, but repeated listens have revealed its qualities. Samson Savill de Jong: It’s a bit of a grower, this one. Treating the trap beat like George Jones did pedal steel allows him to flaunt a conversational cadence: he’s not smarmy, just chatty, honest about not having enough on his mind but knowing that mind well. Wayne Weizhen Zhang: The iceberg-paced Sam Hunt-ification of country music shows no signs of stopping - and I’m not mad about it.Īlfred Soto: A tub full of blarney, guts, and mullets, Morgan Wallen may be indistinguishable from Sam Hunt in a lineup, but he’s even more influenced by hip-hop. Matthew Barney is part of a group of artists who are makers and doers and their work has got a physical quality. The performance makes reference to the film ‘River of Fundament’ as Egyptians transported giant stones on sleds for building their pyramids. It’s fascinating to see how they work together as a group and to watch the amount of energy and effort of pulling and pushing the block throughout the gallery. They start dragging the edge of the block throughout the exhibition space close to the walls leaving uneven traces of graphite on the wall. Their attire is all black and they look tough and sexy at the same time wearing helmets and athletic mini shorts. In the next scene eight female American Football players enter the MOCA exhibition space. The video that has no audio, starts with a man tying the block with ropes on the wood sleds. It is inspired by Barney’s fascination with the fact that the human body needs resistance in order to develop muscular strength and he translated that idea into a drawing. ![]() The title is ‘Portcullis Block’ and features in the video ‘Drawing Restraint 23’ that is part of an ongoing series of drawings made in situ during a live performance. In the same room as ‘Boat of Ra’ stands a massive block on wood sleds, a sculpted carbon megalith with an edge sticking out, that weighs 2286 kilograms. Just like the composer John Cage, Barney adopts chance techniques creating fascinating, unpredictable forms impossible to model and cast by hand. For ‘Water Cast 12: White Dwarf’ Barney used the same process and polycaprolactone, a material he worked with before such as in ‘Imperial Mask’. The structure of the sculptures reminds me of the fragility of coral or the porosity of Kletskoppen (crunchy, thin cookies from Belgium) but Welsh tells me that they are very solid and very heavy. As the bronze comes into contact with the moisture, the metal violently displaces the water and finds its way into the crevices between the pieces of clay, eventually hardening and resulting in random forms. Molten bronze was poured into a pit of bentonite clay silt. Isha Welsh, director of the gallery, tells me how the sculptures were conceived. Moca exhibits eight of the fourteen ‘Water Castings’, Regen Projects in West Hollywood, exhibits six sculptures. The Water Castings consist of fourteen sculptures that refer to the Egyptian myth of Osiris whose body was cut into fourteen pieces. When you mount the stairs you have a great overview of the space and look from above on the sculptures displayed on the floor. The works are positioned in enclosed rooms and open spaces. Also three generations of American cars feature prominently in the film including the 2001 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. The space works complementary with the nature of the sculptures which are raw, massive and industrial. MOCA is located in a former police car warehouse renovated by Frank Gehry. The show also includes an intriguing video which was created in situ and a new series of ‘Water Casts’ sculptures. Now, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, located in the Little Tokyo district in Los Angeles, presents a magnificent overview showing all the large-scale sculptures that feature in the film, storyboards, sketches and drawings. The film is based on Norman Mailer’s ‘Ancient Evenings’ addressing themes such as death, regeneration and rebirth set in ancient Egypt. However, there was a reason for it, and that was Ace's mother. Newborns, children yet to be born, and even the mothers, but they did not find anything. Sengoku then goes on to say that the Marines searched an island for the possibility that a certain man had born a child. Ace replies that Whitebeard is his father, but Sengoku claims he is not.
